Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs) are arrangements between debtors and creditors. IVAs can be an alternative for people who may be facing bankruptcy. The IVA is a law that was created in the United Kingdom as a component of the Insolvency Act of 1986.

IVA, is administered by a professional known as a Licensed Insolvency Practioner. It focuses on trying to discover a mid-point between the person owing money (in most cases a single person) A form of compromise, to avoid bankruptcy, and to pay back a affordable amount to creditors. It is advantageous to those who lend money because these creditors end up with bigger payments than in a bankruptcy scenario. The duration of an IVA can vary from 3 to 5 years on average during which time the debtor sets aside a portion of their salary to pay back their debt.

An IVA is a legally binding agreement between both of the parties; these are the debtor and the creditor’s The IVA gives the benefit to the debtor in that he will comply with his obligations in an organized way so that the creditors can not take any action against the debtor or less he or she breaks the agreement.

It is also important to know that all interest is frozen, so your debt will not increase over the duration of the IVA.

Even though it is not generally referred to as "bankruptcy", IVA help also causes debtors to be listed in the public Personal Insolvency Register. However, unlike during a bankruptcy, the debtor is still able to get credit, though it has to be said in most cases with some difficulty and should never be seen as an easy option over bankruptcy.

IVA is viewed more favorably than bankruptcy because it shows intention to pay back the debt, which casts the debtor in a more positive light. However in each instance the IVA or bankruptcy documentation remains in their credit report for a six year term. It can be difficult to obtain any credit or loans during this time.
