Collectors do not want you to know that you have debt rights that they need to uphold. Read through the following list of your rights so that you know if you are being treated fairly or not.

If, at any point in time, you want a collection agency to stop contacting you, you have a debt right to mail them a letter requesting they stop. By law, these collectors need to cease any calls to you.

Debt collectors do need to adhere to specific time restrictions. They are not allowed to call you before eight in the morning or after nine at night. Do not believe them if they tell you otherwise.

They are not allowed to harass you, use foul language, or make threats towards you. They are not allowed to attack you in any way.

They are not allowed to intimidate you by exaggerating the amount you owe.

They are not allowed to take money from you through social security or IRAs, if they are threatening you with this, it is only a scare tactic.

You have the right to refute any debt owed by you. If you do, they have to prove you owe that amount.
